Inawashiro Lake and Aizu Cultural Excursion

Participants will experience the magnificent natural scenery of Lake Inawashiro together with the history and culture of the Aizu region.

In the morning, participants will take a lake cruise on Lake Inawashiro and observe the geographical features of Mount Bandai and the surrounding lake landscape from the water.

After that, the group will visit Tenkyo-kaku, a Western-style building from the Meiji era.

After lunch, participants will visit the Aizu Domain School Nisshinkan, which recreates the educational institution of the Aizu domain during the Edo period, where they can learn about the educational philosophy of Aizu and the spirit of Bushido.

Lake Inawashiro (Tenkyoko)

Lake Inawashiro is known for having some of the clearest water in Japan.

Because the surface of the lake reflects the sky like a mirror, it is also called “Tenkyoko” (Mirror of Heaven Lake).

Participants will board the sightseeing boat Hakucho-maru and enjoy views of:

Mount Bandai
the expansive shoreline
the large-scale geographical landscape of the lake

These views can be observed from the lake itself.

If the weather conditions are poor, the cruise may be replaced by an alternative facility.

Tenkyo-kaku (Important Cultural Property)

Tenkyo-kaku is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property built in the Meiji era.

It was constructed as a guest house for members of the Imperial family and is an example of Western-style architecture introduced to Japan during that time.

Visitors can observe:

Western architectural styles of the Meiji period
the reception culture used to host distinguished guests
historical interior decorations

Kawakyo Ramen Museum (Lunch)

Lunch will feature dishes centered on Kitakata ramen, one of the famous local foods of the Aizu region.

Participants will have the opportunity to experience one of the representative culinary traditions of the region.

Aizu Domain School Nisshinkan

Nisshinkan is a reconstructed facility that recreates the educational institution of the Aizu domain established during the Edo period.

Visitors can learn about the educational philosophy of Aizu, which is symbolized by the well-known teaching:

“What must not be done must never be done.”

This principle reflects the Bushido spirit and educational culture that guided the samurai of Aizu.

Important Notes for Participants

The excursion will be conducted as a group tour (about 30 participants). Please be punctual for all meeting times.
Please wear comfortable walking shoes.
The lakeside area can be windy, so bringing a light jacket is recommended.
The schedule may change depending on traffic conditions or weather.
